Keynote Speaker: State of Hemp in NC

Representative Kelly M. Alexander, Jr.

North Carolina House 107

Rep. Alexander is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holding a Bachelor of Arts, in Political Science and a Masters, in Public Administration. He worked for two and a half decades in civil rights, serving at the local, state and national levels of the NAACP. He has taught classes in politics, history and black studies at various colleges and universities. He has also written oped’s for newspapers in the Charlotte area and done radio commentary on issues of the day.

Mr. Alexander is a licensed funeral director working at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., for over 30 years. He is presently the funeral home’s Vice President/CFO.

In 2008, he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Rep. Pete Cunningham. While serving in the NC
House he has been a member of the Finance, Energy and Public Utilities, Education, Transportation, and Agriculture committees. From his earliest days in the legislature he has been interested in drug policy, working initially with Rep. Earl Jones to reform cannabis laws. Every session since 2008 he has
sponsored or cosponsored legislation to create a legal cannabis industry in North Carolina. In 2019 he founded the legislative Cannabis Caucus, which is dedicated to the growth of hemp/marijuana production, research, processing, distribution and regulation.  In 2019, he led the fight in the NC House to keep Smokable hemp from being outlawed in the Farm Bill. He believed that outlawing Smokable hemp would impede the development of a viable hemp industry in the state.

During his legislative career, Rep. Alexander has been an advocate for conservation of the state’s natural resources and adoption of best practices for renewable energy, and water conservation. He also advocates for mass transit, assistance to low income families, property tax reform and Medicaid

Representative Alexander has made it his mission to not only serve the needs of his district constituents but of every citizen of North Carolina. He is inspired to unlock the hidden potential of our great state.
